□College and Career Goals
1ページ/1ページ

Nowadays, there are many people who don't enter university or college soon after their graduation of high school and take a working holiday or experience many things by doing some volunteer activities. Especially in Europe, it seems there are much more people who take a short period to explore before their entrance into a school than in Asia. I think many people have different opinion about this but personally I believe that it's a good idea to take one or two years before high school graduates get into university or college.

Firstly, I want to think about the problems which happen by not taking this short period to explore. When we don't have any dreams and cannot see the future, we feel very uneasy. There are not so many high school graduates who have a clear idea of their goals. When I was a high school student, I met a wonderful English teacher and decided to learn English seriously. I thought it didn't last so long because every time I decide an aim or dream I usually give it up in the middle of progress. But to my surprise, when I was said to choose university to go, I thought I wanted to study English more and more so I had chosen the university I go right now. Although I completely fell in love with English, some students around me seem to have different feelings towards English. One of my friend said that she chose this university because her parents had said that they would give her only one chance to take entrance exam and she chose English major because it seemed that this major is the best level in this university. So she didn't choose this university and major because she wanted to study English. When I heard this story, I thought that if her parents gave her one more chance or one more year to think, she could have found what she wanted to do and chosen the way. She also said that she was afraid because she might find something she really wants to do while she is being a student of this university. If she found interests not in English but in some other things, she would feel very annoyed to go to her school. And if she quit her school, her parents would be very angry because it means the money they spent and the time she spent came to nothing. I think high school graduated are too young to decide which way they should go. So it's a very sensible idea to take one year or more before they get into university or college.

Secondly, I want to show you some good affects which high school graduates can get by delaying college until they have a clear idea of their career goals. I think if they took such period between high school and college, it would be a nice opportunity to think about whether going to college is really a good thing or not for them. And what they experienced at that period would be useful when they choose major or what they want to be in the future. Usually, high school students don't have so many opportunities to experience a lot of things when they are in school because they have to study for entrance exam. So their field of vision tends to be narrow. They might make a wrong decision when they decide which university or college to go. I think taking short period of experiencing what they have never done before would help them to make a sensible decision and then they would not regret what they have done. Moreover, high school graduates can earn money to go to college or university while they are taking this period so that their parents don't have to so much money to their school.

Entering college or not is a big decision. Parents have to pay lots of money for their children but once their children lose their interests into their research or study and find another interest, they feel like they want to quit their school immediately. In fact, some of my friends had quit their school already. So they have to be really careful when they choose school. I think high school graduates who don't have any goals or aims should delay college until they have a clear idea of their career goals because it can be a very dangerous decision to make while they are still wandering which way to go.
